Over a week ago, while my girlfriend Kara was in town, she and I took a stab at a golf ball cake. She'd never used fondant and wanted to give it a try, and I deemed this the perfect opportunity to practice making a round ball cake for a cake I would be making the following week.
Note: I need to work on my instruction skills, considering I made Kara do all the work.
I have to admit that her ball turned out much better than mine. At least I liked hers better than mine.
This cake was for my uncle's 60th birthday party. I stacked a ball cake onto an 8" square cake. Everyone loved it, but honestly, it didn't live up to my expectations. Most notably the ball.
Kara's golf ball cake.
Chocolate fudge w/ buttercream filling/icing. Covered in mmf. Grass is also buttercream.
For Kara's cake, we stacked half a ball cake onto two 6" rounds and carved the cake at the bottom for a more ball-like appearance. It turned out really well. For my cake, I did not carve and in my opinion, the ball was too tall. I probably should have only used one 6" round. I also really struggled with the dimpling. It's very tedious dimpling fondant to get the the golf ball look, and I grew impatient. It shows and the cake suffered for it. The number/letting placement was a little askew too.
I guess hindsight is truly 20/20. If I had to do it all over again, I know exactly what I'd do differently. But it was presentable and so delish!
Bottom tier is butter cake w/ buttercream filling. Golf ball is vanilla w/ blackberry preserves. All covered and decorated w/ mmf.
wow..nice cake
ReplyDeleteI would love to try this cake for fathers day. First, I'll start looking for the ball pan. Can you give me those hindsite tips? How did you dimple it? I think both cakes turned out wonderful. Your to hard on yourself!
